StudioKinky Studio, EdinburghSince 1997 Jim has been based at Kinky Studio situated in "Out of the Blue", a Left field arts complex above The Bongo Club in Edinburgh. In that time He has produced albums for release as well as writing and recording synchronous music for film.
If you are a guitar player, the 1959 Selmer truevoice guitar amp for that unique tremolo or maybe you'd be into the early 1970s Vox AC 30. There's also a Line 6 AX2 guitar amp for those looking for something a little bit more modern. KeyboardFor the keyboard player there's a good range of toys with no less than
fourteen synthesisers in the studio from old analogue monosynths like
the Roland SH101, the Yamaha CS10 and the Sid Station, to leading contemporary
instruments like the Nord Rack and Nord Modular. Sampling facilities
include the Akai S3200 and various computer programmes. Singers can
try out the range of microphones. There are High-end Valve microphones
like the Geffell UM80 and the Rode Classic; a particular favourite on
vocals is the Electrovoice RE20. Jim enjoys trying his collection of
obscure mics like the paper cone 1950s Reslo microphone even finding
a converted fire alarm speaker Llama's ToenailsJim has in the past been a keen collector of strange percussion from around the world. This collection is also available for studio use and includes, Llamas toenails from Bolivia, Bean pods and war clubs from Australia, a hollowed out cactus from Chile, a set of gongs from the Chinese Opera a pair of the finest Gong Bop congas, bodhrans, Ugandan drums, djembes, drums to rub, baskets to shake and many more wonderful toys from around the world! Jim has worked closely with engineer Nik Kinloch for many projects. Nik designed and oversaw the build of Kinky Studios, including the acoustic treatment of the room.
