Record Production

Jim's complex musical background in commercial, folk, art, and electronic music gives him the unique ability to work with artists either in conventional genres such as folk, pop, and rock or with the new generation of artists who cross musical boundaries. Jim works mainly from his Edinburgh recording studio.

Film and TV

Working from his Edinburgh recording studio, Jim has composed synchronous music and worked on sound design for more than 45 film and TV projects.

• He has particular skills in creating atmospheric soundscapes and writing beautiful evocative melodies that capture the moment.

 

Sessions and Performance

Jim is a world-class player of percussion and particularly the bodhran a simple Celtic frame drum. He also plays mandolin and cittern to a very high standard. He played electric guitar and percussion with his Columbia artist project The Lanterns as well as programming beats and keys for them.

You will find Jim on an eclectic mix of other people's shows and albums. Jools Holland's 'Later' and MTV Unplugged and the multi- platinum album No Quarter with Page and Plant, to Edinburgh Castle with Van Morrison and The Chieftains to Emmlou Harris, The McGarrigles, John Martyn & Cathy Matea on the Transatlantic Sessions. He was invited to collaborate with Aboriginal musicians in Australia to create a performance piece called Celtic Dreaming, which was broadcast nationally on ABC TV in Australia. Various 'house bands' on several leading TV music and arts series including Shetland Sessions, Togaidh SinnFonn, TACSI, Talla A Bhaile. Jim also had a number of high profile pupils including in 1994 Evelyn Glennie for bodhran lessons and advised U2 on how to play the locust bean pods!

 

Songwriting

As a commercial songwriter and artist Jim has worked across many genres, from commercial pop, as principal writer for the Lanterns, to being considered as one of the finest composers of traditional and crossover music. Check out Jim's credit listing.

As a collaborator he is often called on to work with an artist on structure and creative direction.

Tunes

Jim has written around sixty reels and jigs. As a young musician in 1984 he published a book of music The Flow Country which turned out to be somewhat of a legacy. Those tunes were picked up, played and recorded by hundreds of musicians. Check out Jim's extensive credit listings.

The Easy Club reel alone has been recorded on more than thirty albums. Jim's Scottish tunes crop up again and again on recordings around the World.

SCOTTISH FOLK MUSIC CLASSICS

You can walk down Princes Street in Edinburgh and hear the buskers playing Jim's tunes or walk into Irish pubs around the world from San Francisco to Sydney and hear them played as part of the jam session.

Jim has had his tunes recorded by folk musicians and groups from all over the world and at the last count there are at least 103 albums which feature his Celtic folk compositions.

SONY MUSIC

In 1997 Blair MacDonald signed Jim to Sony Music a songwriter. Jim wrote songs for and performed with his artist project The Lanterns which was signed to Columbia Records and A&Rd by David Balfe.

THE LANTERNS, Sylvia and Gina Rae and Jim Sutherland

The Lanterns recorded their album between Peter Vittessi's studio in Epsom and Jim's Kinky Studio in Edinburgh through the first half 1998. Jim spent the second half of the year working on remixes and B-sides at Kinky. Leading style magazine Dazed and Confused featured the band on the cover of the December issue.

1999 saw the release of 3 singles including the critically acclaimed, Top Forty placed, High Rise Town with a video directed by David Mackenzie. A Todd Terry remix of Jim's song Winter in my heart reached No 2 in the UK club charts. That year, in July, The Lanterns were the subject of a CH4 documentary directed by Nicola Black.. In Aug 1999 The Lanterns album Illuminate Yer Heid was released to great acclaim.

COLLABORATIONS AND NEW PROJECTS

Jim acts as a catalyst for many new songwriting projects, working with individual songwriters, and encouraging collaborations, often taking these projects into the studio. In 2000 he jointly established the Electronic Music Club in Edinburgh to informally stimulate networking and collaborations, particularly in electronic music. Jim is currently developing a new collaborative writing project with some of Edinburgh's most exciting young talent. This is how the Lanterns were formed.

 

MUSIC FOR THEATRE

Jim has also composed music for several theatre productions including in 1993 The Legend of St. Julian for Communicado Theatre Company, a physical production with no dialogue. This Production won a much-coveted Fringe First at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe that year.
